Hollywood Blues

Nothing new to report on The Sparrow, and this article by Mark Harris explains why, in a general sort of way.

The Day the Movies Died

The Sparrow is a classic “passion project,” and the climate for that kind of thing is withering right now, so don’t hold your breath while you wait for it. Still, as Vincenzo Guiliani would say, “We are not talking about ripe peaches.” It’ll keep, and the longer it takes to put the package together, the cheaper and better the special effects will be.

  1. That sucks. The Sparrow is one of my top 5 all-time favourite books, and I have been hoping for a most excellent movie rendition.

Oh well; just means when the movie is made, I’ll enjoy it all the more for the seasoning that waiting will give it 🙂

Keep the faith, MDR. This *will* happen.

  2. I’m of two minds about this. While I would like to see the movie adaptation, I am terrified of it. I ADORE The Sparrow and more often than not, cerebral books don’t translate well to the screen….

  3. As much as I’d love to see The Sparrow on screen, I’m content to wait if that means there is a greater chance that it will be done right.

  4. I, too, will keep the faith that someone in movieland will recognize the unique brilliance of The Sparrow and not rest until it’s on the screen.

  5. How long did it take for the “Lord of the Rings” to be made in a worth while movie- I’d rather see a well made, well thought out movie than a piece of “sell ’em all trash”. I can wait – but then- I’m no spring chicken- come on producer, screen writers etc… get moving!!

  6. The Sparrow is one of my top three favorites, too. I have been waiting and hoping for years that a movie would come along. All of these remakes that that are being churned out frustrate me. Anyone who has read The Sparrow, know it is so much more than Jesuits in Space! Send a copy to Spielberg ? It is possible to stay true to a book, Harry Potter was done pretty well.. I am still wishing and hoping!

In the meantime, I will be reading Doc.
