Doc Holliday at 21: Graduation photo closeup
-
-
Doc ca. 1881
-
-
Though often said to be Doc, this man is not John Henry Holliday. At 20, JHH’s hairline had already receded beyond those of the man above and his eyebrows were sharply arched, a trait that doesn’t change with age.
-
-
Another popular photo said to be Doc, this man has been identified as John Escapule, a mining engineer who lived in Tombstone in the 1880s.
-
-
Why Doc drank: cavitated lungs, damaged by TB
-
-
Advanced pulmonary tuberculosis like John Henry Holliday’s often spread
to the spine, eating the bone away until it collapses.
The spine bends or twists and the patient loses height. Doc was 6′ tall
at 22, but said to be of medium height by the time he lived in
Tombstone, 8 years later.
